AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM
TMDF First Serve — Sponsored by CN, North America's Raiload

The Todd Martin CN First Serve program has been made possible, for three years, by the generous support of CN, North
America's Railroad
In the spring of 2008, the Todd Martin Development Fund, in partnership with Lansing Schools, offered an
after-school program for 4th and 5th graders at the Wainwright Leadership, Law & Government
Magnet School. During three after-school sessions per week, youngsters spent half the time learning tennis
fundamentals, and half the time in intensive life skills training and math tutoring sessions. Applicants
agreed to compulsory attendance.
This program has been expanded for the 2010 - 2011 school year by following the original Wainwright cohort to
5th and 6th grade. Tennis, Math Tutoring and Life Skills are offered every day on
Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. This year the program has become a full First Serve Chapter.
First Serve
is a national program whose
mission is: "Educational and recreational programming that challenges and inspires underserved young people who are dedicated to succeed in
life." This comprehensive program utilizes tennis with the sole purpose of empowering youth with the skills, values, and experience
they need to succeed in life.
In the spring of 2011 a second session for 4th graders is planned.
